How to Keep Good Posture While Working from Home

With so many of us working from home these days, it’s easy to slip into some bad habits, especially with our posture. Whether you’re hunched over a laptop on the couch or seated at a makeshift workstation, it may be very taxing on your body. At JT Chiropractic, we have some easy tips to help you keep your posture in check, even if your home office isn’t exactly ideal.

1. Set Up Your Workspace Right

Let’s start with your workspace. We know sitting at the kitchen table or lounging on the couch might be comfy, but let’s be honest it’s not helping out your posture. The goal is to have a setup that lets you sit with your feet flat on the floor, your knees at a 90-degree angle, and your computer screen at eye level. If your screen’s too low, you can stack some books under your laptop or get a stand to lift it up. This helps keep your spine in line and takes the strain off your neck and shoulders.

2. Don’t Forget About Your Chair

Your chair is a big deal when it comes to posture. If you’re using a regular dining chair, try adding a cushion or rolling up a towel to put behind your lower back for extra support. You want to keep the natural curve of your spine. If you can, consider getting an ergonomic chair that gives good support and helps you sit up straight. Trust us, your back will thank you!

3. Take Regular Breaks

Even with a perfect setup, sitting for too long can still have an effect your body. That’s why taking breaks is super important. Every 30 minutes or so, get up, stretch, and have a move around. This takes the pressure off your spine and keeps your muscles from getting stiff. Plus, it’s a great way to refresh your mind and stay focused.

4. Stretch It Out

Stretching is essential to maintaining good posture. Simple stretches can assist to loosen your muscles and relieve tension. Throughout the day, practise shoulder rolls, neck stretches, and back extensions. These will help in reducing the effects of sitting and keep your body feeling relaxed.

5. Stay Mindful of Your Posture

One of the best things you can do is just be aware of your posture. It’s easy to start the day sitting up straight but then slowly slump into your chair as the hours go by. Check in with yourself regularly, are your shoulders creeping up toward your ears? Is your back starting to hunch over? If so, it’s good to take a moment to reset, try sitting up tall, rolling your shoulders back, and keeping your head aligned with your spine.

6. Consider a Standing Desk

If sitting all day isn’t doing you any good, consider trying a standing desk. Standing desks can help you improve your posture through maintaining natural body alignment. Just make sure you’re standing with your weight properly spread on both feet, not leaning to one side. If a standing desk is not an option, consider alternating between sitting and standing during the day to change things up.

Keeping good posture while working from home doesn’t have to be hard. With the right setup, some regular breaks, and a few stretches, you can avoid the aches and pains that come with poor posture.
